Twenty-four years ago, R&B sensation D’Angelo was a Virginian teenager on the cusp of stardom. The 16-year-old ventured to Harlem’s Apollo Theater, taking the stage for the venue’s Amateur Night and winning it – three nights in a row.

Flash forward to 2015, as D’Angelo headlined the venue for his first-ever time last Saturday. Aside from a recent appearance on Saturday Night Live [watch here], this was D’Angelo’s first performance in support of the new album. And, by all accounts, D’Angelo dominated.

The R&B star played tracks from his new album, Black Messiah, as well as cuts from his earlier work. His eight-piece band included renowned bassist Pino Palladino (The Who, John Mayer Trio), guitarist Jesse Johnson (The Time, Prince), and vocalist Kendra Foster, and the unity and synchronization of this performance was truly something to behold.

D’Angelo also excitingly announced that he will perform at the Best Buy Theater on March 11th, with tickets on sale later this week. Here are a handful of videos from throughout the Apollo show, just to get you in the mood.

Watch as the group ends the show with a fourteen minute version of the 2000 hit, “Untitled (How Does It Feel).”
