Dark Star Orchestra, the beloved Grateful Dead tribute act, will bring the spirit of the Dead back to Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO with a headlining performance on Monday, July 5th (tickets now on sale here).

The full-capacity concert will mark the third-ever Red Rocks performance by Dark Star Orchestra, which is known for recreating complete Grateful Dead setlists as a celebration of the band’s legacy.

The previous two Dark Star Orchestra Red Rocks shows—in 2018 and 2019, respectively—saw the planets align in more ways than one, allowing DSO to recreate two Grateful Dead Red Rocks shows at Red Rocks on the actual date on which they occurred.

For its auspicious Morrison debut in 2018, Dark Star Orchestra welcomed former Grateful Dead vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux Mackay to help recreate the Dead’s own Red Rocks debut exactly 40 years after the day it occurred on July 8th, 1978.

In 2019, DSO returned to Red Rocks (along with Hot Tuna), where they matched another Grateful Dead Red Rocks show on its birthday—this time the band’s September 8th, 1983 performance. Watch a recap video of the 2019 DSO Red Rocks blowout below.

When DSO returns to Morrison on July 5th, the path won’t be as clear as it was in previous years. While the Dead played 20 shows at Red Rocks between 1978 and 1987, none of those performances took place on 7/5. The show’s announcement maintained that aura of mystery, billing the performance as “celebrating the Grateful Dead experience” without hinting at what show may be in the band’s sights.

Fans will have to make their way to the show on Monday, July 5th to see which of the Grateful Dead’s many paths Dark Star Orchestra takes the third time around. But one thing is for certain: with DSO on the schedule, the sounds of the good ol’ Grateful Dead will once again echo through Red Rocks, and that’s something worth celebrating.

Grab your tickets to see DSO at Red Rocks on Monday, July 5th here and RSVP to the Facebook event page here for updates.
