Last year, Dave Harrington and Nicolás Jaar delivered Darkside‘s long-awaited sophomore album. The experimental-ambient duo released Spiral, the group’s first studio album since its 2013 debut Psychic, signaling the end of a six-year hiatus. On Wednesday, Darkside shared “Ecdysis!”, a song recorded during the original Spiral sessions.

The creative process for Spiral began with a weeklong jam session in New Jersey. That initial summit birthed several songs a year-and-a-half before the vision of the album was fully realized. With such a wealth of material emerging so early in the recording process, Darkside presumably has much more material than the nine tracks found on Spiral.

The first ten seconds of “Ecdysis!” are a rollercoaster that is pure Darkside. The opening warble of computerized tracks suggests something much more avant-garde before the song drops into a computerized beat as infectious as it is simple. The song carries the aesthetic of a darkened New York City basement where a concert that may not be 100% permitted has nevertheless popped up. “Ecdysis” refers to the process of reptiles or insects shedding their outer layer of skin or cuticle. Interpreted in tandem with Darkside’s return, “Ecdysis!” may signal a new artistic evolution for the band.
