Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has announced the upcoming release of a new two-part documentary titled PLAY. The new documentary, written by Grohl himself, celebrates “the rewards and challenges of dedicating one’s life to playing and mastering a musical instrument.” The film draws connections between the ambitions of new music students pursuing excellence in their instrument and the similar continuing aspirations of seasoned rock stars. In addition, the film features a new solo jam by Grohl, in which he constructs a nearly 25-minute opus incorporating seven different instruments.

Dave Grohl has been known to dip his feet in the waters of documentary filmmaking for some time. In 2013, he made his directorial debut with Sound City, a doc exploring the history of Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, CA, where his former band, Nirvana, recorded Nevermind in 1991. The next year, he released Sonic Highways, an HBO mini-series in which each episode focuses on the musical history of a different American city.

PLAY was filmed in black and white by Brandon Trost, the cinematographer behind cult-favorite comedies like This Is The EndThe Disaster Artist, and The Interview, and directed by Grohl and Mark Monroe, with whom he previously collaborated on his 2014’s Sonic Highways.

As Grohl explains in the PLAY teaser video description,

When I take my kids to the place where they take their lessons, I see these rooms full of children that are really pushing themselves to figure this out. And even now, as a 49-year-old man, I’m still trying to figure it out… it’s not something that you ever truly master. You’re always chasing the next challenge, and you’re always trying to find a way to improve on what you’ve learned.
