Returning stateside after crossing into Canada to play at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage, Dave Matthews Band continued its summer tour with a run of guest-filled shows in the Midwest and Southeast, including one night at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, MI and two nights each at Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, IN and Allianz Amphitheater in Richmond, VA—where the band welcomed crew member Joe Lawlor to sit in on guitar.

DMB’s return to Pine Knob delivered a lively mix of deep cuts and staples, highlighted by a surprise cameo from Valdez Brantley, who joined in on keyboard for a cover Cameo‘s “Word Up” and on keytar for fan favorite “Tripping Billies”. The band also dipped into the Led Zeppelin songbook for “Fool in the Rain” and closed the main set with “Grey Street”. Dave opened the encore solo with a hushed rendition of “Some Devil” before the full band rejoined for “So Right”.

Night one at the venue formerly known as Deer Creek featured a well-paced set rich in fan favorites, including a dreamy “Pantala Naga Pampa” > “Pig” pairing, an intense rendition of “Don’t Drink the Water”, and a welcome appearance of “Busted Stuff”. Longtime staples like “Ants Marching” and “Two Step” delighted diehard and casual fans alike, while Dave’s solo version of “Here On Out” opened the encore on a heartfelt note. Night two leaned more adventurous, with deeper cuts like “Minarets”, “JTR”, and “Stolen Away on 55th & 3rd” mixed in amongst DMB classics like “Tripping Billies” and “#41”, plus a run of “Lover Lay Down” into “Drunken Soldier” and a mid-set cover of David Bowie‘s “Let’s Dance”. “The Last Stop” closed the show with dramatic flair, following another “Some Devil” solo performance in the encore.

Back in Richmond for the first time since 1996, DMB made the most of a long-awaited home-state stand. Night one featured seamless segues—like “Big Eyed Fish” > “Bartender” and a fiery “So Much to Say” > “Anyone Seen the Bridge” > “Too Much” closer—plus a bluesy, stripped-down cover of Tex Ritter‘s “Rye Whiskey” to start the encore. The following night, Matthews called up crew member Joe Lawlor to sit in on “The Only Thing”, and later in the show, jazz trumpeter and Richmond native John D’earth added rich brass textures to “Proudest Monkey” and “Typical Situation”. A partial tease of “Drunken Soldier” turned into a full version later in the set, bookended by a reprise of “Word Up” and a set-closing “So Right”. Dave again opened the encore solo with “Some Devil” before the band wrapped the two-night stand on a triumphant note with “Two Step”.
