Dave Matthews Band was a man up on Wednesday in New Jersey where the band welcomed pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph for a sit-in. The frequent guest of DMB joined in for a couple of songs during the band’s show at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel amid its summer tour.
Dave Matthews Band hit the ground running on Wednesday, dishing out a mix of chart-toppers (“Crash Into Me”), fan favorites (“Lie in Our Graves”), and a tour debut (“Rooftop”) in the first 13 songs of the set before bringing out Randolph. The sacred steel guitarist has been collaborating with DMB since 2002 and last shared the stage with Dave Matthews and the crew in 2021 during their annual Labor Day blowout at The Gorge Amphitheater in Washington. Their familiarity was on full display as the band went into live standard “Grace is Gone” with Randolph, who hung around for “Hello Again”. On the latter sporadic live selection, Randolph’s guitar shined with a blistering psychedelic solo like what Jimi Hendrix would’ve sounded like if he had played pedal steel.
Watch Robert Randolph join Dave Matthews Band on “Hello Again” and other highlights from the show below. The band’s tour continues on Friday in Mansfield, MA. Visit DMB’s website for tickets and a full list of tour dates.
