Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds paid respect to the late Bob Weir during their first of three headlining performances at Dave & Tim Riviera Maya on Thursday night.

Joined by members of Minnesota-based progressive bluegrass band Trampled By Turtles, the duo performed Grateful Dead classics “Friend of the Devil” and “Casey Jones” in honor of Weir, the guitarist and founding member of Grateful Dead who passed away on January 10th at the age of 78.

Dave & Tim Riviera Maya takes place this weekend at Moon Palace Cancun, the same resort that hosted Weir’s Dead Ahead and Dead & Company’s Playing in the Sand events. On the evening of Weir’s passing, 100x Hospitality CEO Dan Berkowitz reflected on the music legend’s influence during onstage remarks at Noah Kahan’s Out of the Blue Festival. “Bobby played this stage more than anybody,” Berkowitz said. “The reason we do what we do is because of the Grateful Dead. The idea of people coming together—traveling long distances to experience live music together—came straight from Bob Weir and the Grateful Dead.”

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds’ annual Riviera Maya event continues on Friday and Saturday night with additional performances by Matthews and Reynolds, Joy Oladokun, Say She She and more.
