Dave Matthews Band violinist Boyd Tinsley is in some surprising legal trouble, considering the plaintiff is someone who stole upwards of $9 million from Tinsley.
Boyd Tinsley of Dave Matthews Band is a Victim of Fraud Committed By Own Manager
Tinsley’s property manager, Getty Rothberg, was convicted of embezzlement in 2013, after it was discovered that he had been stealing money between the years of 2009 and 2012. When he was sentenced in January of 2014, he was ordered to pay back $1.25 million, and only served ten months in prison – due to Tinsley’s request that Rothberg get a lenient sentence so that he could be rehabilitated.
A mere four months after his sentence, Rothberg has filed a massive lawsuit against Tinsley, seeking $10 million in damages. Rothberg alleges that there were “sexual improprieties,” and that Tinsley prevented an opportunity for Rothberg to represent tennis star Andy Roddick.
Of course, Tinsley’s lawyer is asking the courts to throw out the case, calling it “a little more than extortion.” While Rothberg’s lawsuit calls Tinsley “a sexual predator,” Tinsley’s lawyers claim that the suit is a smear campaign. They say that “the vast majority of the allegations contained in the complaint have absolutely nothing to do” with the lost business opportunity.
From our perspective, it seems like the embezzlement and prison sentence probably cost Rothberg the job. Regardless, there is a hearing set for next Tuesday.
