After a successful first night at Fenway Park, Dead & Company explored new territory for the second show in Boston. The past few dates on this tour have been particularly triumphant for the six-piece Grateful Dead ensemble, with Dead & Company kicking into high gear as they tear through their summer tour with eyes set on their Wrigley Field dates ahead of 4th of July. On Sunday night, the band continued their impactful stride with two surprise-filled sets.

The first set opened with guitarists and vocalists Bob Weir and John Mayer trading leads on songs like “Samson & Delilah” and “Candyman,” inviting the crowd to join in a beautiful Sunday night. After five songs of Grateful Dead magic, the band went fully acoustic for a trio of “Friend of the Devil,” an incomplete “Dark Star,” and “Ripple.” While Bob Weir & The Campfire Band debuted an acoustic “Dark Star” earlier this year, this was the first time Dead & Company performed it this way.

The second set featured a memorable “Fire On The Mountain,” with bassist Oteil Burbridge taking a rare turn a lead vocals. The Weir and Mayer-led “St. Stephen” featured an extended jam that ultimately led into “Drums>Space.” Within those dark corners of the universe, the second half of “Dark Star” emerged. The second set closed with the full band participating in “Not Fadeaway,” before again returning for a “Brokedown Palace” encore.
