Dead & Company held a soft opening for their summer tour earlier this month closing out the second Saturday of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The two-hour, single-set performance marked the band’s first appearance since the final Playing In The Sand Mexican destination event. It also came on the heels of an announcement from original Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann that he would be sitting out the final tour, citing “a shift in creative direction”. Akin to last year’s summer tour where Kreutzmann was dogged by lingering health issuesJay Lane will take over the drum kit beside Mickey Hart for this last go-round.

Following the Jazz Fest appearance, Dead & Company staged a special concert at Cornell University‘s Barton Hall on May 8th, marking the 46th anniversary of one of the Grateful Dead’s most famous shows performed in the very same Ithaca, NY field house.
