Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to Red Rocks Amphitheatre over the weekend for a two-night stand with support from Grace Bowers & The Hodge Podge. The run coincided with what would have been Jerry Garcia‘s 83rd birthday, and Derek Trucks honored the occasion by playing the Grateful Dead guitarist’s 1976 Travis Bean TB500 #12 guitar on a pair of songs each night, including the TTB debut of “Franklin’s Tower”.
Trucks wielded Jerry’s axe when the band took the stage on Friday and opened with the Deadhead anthem, which featured Susan Tedeschi on lead vocals. He also used it on a cover of’ “Anyday” by Derek & The Dominos before swapping it out for his signature Gibson SG.
Then on Saturday, Trucks once again played the TB500—which Garcia used with the Grateful Dead from December 31st, 1976 through the legendary Englishtown shows the following year—during a medley of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” and “Sugaree”.

Notably, Nick Bockrath of Cage the Elephant also played one of Jerry’s Travis Bean guitars—his TB500 # 11—at Lollapalooza on Thursday, including on cover of Black Sabbath‘s “Changes” in tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, and for the majority of Cage’s set at the Salt Shed in Chicago the following night.
