Whether leading his own Project Logic or collaborating with artists like Medeski Martin & Wood, John Mayer, and The Roots, if there’s one thing DJ Logic knows, it’s how to curate a vibe. Never has that been more evident than during this weekend’s DJ Logic & Friends run at Park City Music Hall in Bridgeport, CT and New York’s Brooklyn Bowl.
The renowned turntablist put together a stacked lineup of heavy hitters from across the funk and jam spectrum including Neal Evans (Soulive) on keys, Nate Edgar (The Nth Power) on bass, Eddie Roberts (The New Mastersounds) on guitar, and Ben Atkind (Goose) on drums. The five master improvisers created brand new grooves on the spot, combining soul, jazz, funk, rock, hip-hop, and even some reggae to create a fusion far greater than the sum of its parts.
The run kicked off with two shows at Park City Music Hall on Friday and Saturday and concluded with a single show at Brooklyn Bowl on Sunday. As with any fully improvised performance, there were high points and moments of deep digging, and as with any all-star/supergroup lineup, there was a risk of the combination falling flat, but it was apparent from the audience’s reaction that the group exceeded all expectations, which were high given the stature of the lineup.
