Late rapper DMX seeks redemption following his incarceration in a new trailer for the documentary, DMX: Don’t Try to Understand. The film premieres on Thanksgiving, November 25th, at 8 p.m. ET on HBO as part of the Music Box documentary series.
The Christopher Frierson-directed project “follows a year in the life of the late rapper as he rebuilds his career and reconnects with family and fans.” The rapper, born Earl Simmons, served 12 months in prison for felony tax evasion and was released on January 25th, 2019. The film features interviews with Simmons, his family, and those close to him and examines a period of redemption in the rapper’s life. DMX died on April 9th, 2021 following an accidental drug overdose.

The Music Box series—produced by Bill Simmons (30 for 30)—began back in July with the provocative Woodstock ’99: Peace, Love, And Rage. The six-film series resumed this past Thursday with Jagged, a profile of singer-songwriter Alanis Morrisette and her breakthrough 1995 album, Jagged Little Pill. Following Don’t Try to Understand, three more feature-length documentaries remain, focusing on Kenny G (Listen To Kenny G, 12/2), Robert Stigwood (Mr. Saturday Night, 12/9), and Juice WRLD (Juice WRLD: Into The Abyss, 12/16).
