New Orleans’ own Dumpstaphunk made a trip north this past weekend, linking up with Dave Matthews for he and his band’s two-night stand at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. The funk/jam outfit opened the show on Friday and Saturday night, with both performances including a surprise sit-in for the fans that made it through the gates early.

On night one, Dumpstaphunk began the six-song set with “Dancing to the Truth”, off the band’s 2013 Dirty Word album. Up next came “I Wish You Would”, from the same record, before a cover of Blackmail‘s Bayou funk offering, “Let’s Get At It”. Members Ivan and Ian Neville, Tony Hall, Nick Daniels III, Deven Trusclair, Alex Wasily, and Ashlin Parker then guided the ship forward with “Where Do We Go From Here”, before a penultimate “Justice”. For Dumpstaphunk’s final song, the band welcomed DMB guitarist Tim Reynolds to the stage for a romp through Buddy Miles Express‘ “United Nations Stomp”.

Night two saw the band provide an equally-energetic opening set, kicking things off with “Meanwhile…”. The funky originals continued with “Do You” and “Make It After All”, before a cover of Earl King‘s “Street Parade” fell in the four-hole. Dumpstaphunk saved the biggest surprise for its last moments on the MSG stage. During the fifth and final song, Led Zeppelin‘s “Ramble On”, both Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds joined in on the fun. Reynolds graced the stage with a Gibson SG guitar, slotted between Daniels and Ian Neville, while Matthews needed just a microphone, which he shared with Hall. The electrifying collaboration featured some soaring vocal work by Matthews and Hall, while Reynolds and Neville traded some spicy licks during a solo section.

Later in the evening DMB would return the favor, inviting Parker and Wasily to join on three consecutive songs, “Corn Bread”, “Jimi Thing”, and “I Want To Take Your Higher”.

Dave Matthews Band will continue its fall tour on Friday, November 20th, at Moore Theatre in Seattle, WA, while Dumpstaphunk will hit Empire Control Room & Garage in Austin, TX on the 26th. Head here for more information regarding DMB’s future tour dates and here for Dumpstaphunk.
