New Haven-based jam-rock quartet Eggy hit the stage on Thursday night for a pod-style performance at the beautiful Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Westport, CT.
While tickets for the socially distant show were offered for free, space on the venue’s lawn was limited, so spots were quickly snatched up by Eggy’s rapidly growing fanbase. Thankfully, the band teamed up with Nugs.net to offer a free stream of the entire performance—with drone footage provided by Drogo LLC—to serve up a memorable streaming experience for fans tuning in from home.
Following a pair of shorter sets at recent tour stops like Westville Music Bowl, where the band served as support for Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, and The Peach Music Festival, where they kicked off the weekend’s proceedings with a packed Thursday afternoon performance, Eggy’s Jake Brownstein (guitar/vocals/piano/pedal steel), Dani Battat (keys/vocals), Mike Goodman (bass/vocals), and Alex Bailey (drums/vocals) took the opportunity to settle in during the two-hour headlining show at Levitt Pavilion.
After spending last year locked down at home, many people worked on honing new skills. Brownstein, in particular, showed off a couple of new tricks on Thursday night, moving from guitar to piano for “Broken Bluff” and the debut of pandemic-penned tune “Beyond These Walls”.
Next, he shifted once again to pedal steel—for the first time ever during an Eggy show—for an instrumental reading of “Tale As Old As Time” from Beauty and the Beast (inspired by Doug Stock‘s arrangement), a cover of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young‘s “Teach Your Children”, and original tune “Moments Passed”.

With time for one more surprise, Eggy debuted a cover of Australian psych-rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard‘s new track, “Interior People“, to close out the set. The concluding cover choice was an impressive one both in terms of difficulty and recency: Butterfly 3000, the King Gizzard album on which the song appears, was released just one month ago.
