The release of “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix)” by Elton John and Dua Lipa has helped the former achieve chart records in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
In the States, Elton John now claims the longest span between top 40 appearances on the Billboard Hot 100. “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix)” marks John’s 58th song to land on the Hot 100’s top 40, and his first since his 1999 collaboration with LeAnn Rimes, “Written in the Stars”. His first came back on December 19th, 1970, with “Your Song”—more than half a decade ago.
The record for the longest span of Billboard top 40 Hot 100 appearances, excluding holiday fare, now sits at 50 years and ten months. This surpassed the previous record held by Michael Jackson, which until this week stood at 46 years and eight months. Jackson’s reign started with “Ben” on November 6th, 1971, and ended with July 2018’s “Don’t Matter To Me”.
Including holiday songs, the record stays with The Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Chuck Berry. Berry’s reign sits at 62 years and five months, starting with “Johnny B. Goode” and “Beautiful Delilah” (August 4th, 1958), and continuing through January 9th, 2021’s “Run Rudolph Run”.
Across the pond, Elton John set a separate yet equally impressive chart record. The very same Dua Lipa collaboration netted The Rocket Man another UK Top 10 appearance, making him the first artist to tally the achievement in six different decades. His most recent UK Top 10 hit, 1973’s “Step Into Christmas”, proves resurgent during each holiday season, but his appearances on the chart similarly date back to 1971’s “Your Song”. “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix)” marks his 33rd UK Top 10 and the six-decade streak helped him surpass the likes of Elvis, Cliff Richard, and Michael Jackson.
