On Wednesday night, Eric Clapton opened up his brief U.S. tour with a performance at San Francisco’s newly-opened Chase Center. Clapton’s concert marked the third show ever at the new home of the Golden State Warriors, following performances by Metallica and Dave Matthews Band. Adding to the excitement of the evening, Carlos Santana emerged during Clapton’s encore to lend a helping hand on guitar.
As Clapton’s done in recent years, the guitarist opened up his show with an electric set. Slowhand worked through “Pretending”, Charles Segar‘s “Key To The Highway”, Willie Dixon‘s “I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man”, and The Wailers‘ “I Shot The Sheriff”. The guitarist then picked up his acoustic and worked through Johnny Moore‘s “Driftin’ Blues”, “Circus”, Jimmy Cox‘s “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out”, and “Tears In Heaven”. “Circus” had not been played live by Clapton since a performance in 2016, according to Setlist.FM.
Clapton moved back to his electric arrangement and opened up the final segment of the show with “Badge”, the lone Cream song played last night. Slowhand moved forward with “Holy Mother”, covers of Robert Johnson‘s “Cross Road Blues” and “Little Queen Of Spades”, and a set-closing rendition of “Layla”. For the encore, Clapton welcomed Bay Area native Carlos Santana for a cover of Joe Cocker‘s “High Time We Went”. The two guitarists traded off red-hot guitar licks, backed by Clapton’s impressive touring band.
