The Flaming Lips on Thursday continued their run of special “An Evening With” performances with a show at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair, NJ. The string of concerts from the psychedelic art-rock juggernauts features two-hour concerts filled with deep dives into the band’s catalog.
While Thursday’s setlist was unique, it contained several repeats of recently reintroduced songs from previous performances. These included takes on “Sagittarius Silver Announcement”, “Enthusiasm for Life Defeats Existential Fear”, and “Always There, In Our Hearts”, all of which had spent at least nine years on the shelf before being revived earlier in 2022.
The Flaming Lips also included a cover of Madonna‘s “Borderline”, which the band busted out last Saturday in Atlanta. Prior to that performance at the Coca-Cola Roxy on the 15th, the band hadn’t performed the song off 1984’s Madonna since 2009. Additionally, Wayne Coyne and company made sure to include a healthy selection from their latest disc—2020’s American Head—including “At the Movies on Quaaludes”, “Assassins of Youth”, “Will You Return / When You Come Down”, and “Mother I’ve Taken LSD”.
