Anyone who’s ever watched Flea play bass during a Red Hot Chili Peppers performance is well aware of the abundance of energy burning within the electrifying musician. So it’s somewhat of a nice surprise to know that Flea (real name, Michael Balzary) has the ability to settle what seems like untamable energy long enough to sit down and enjoy a peaceful read. He’ll be doing a lot of that in over the next few weeks as he’s announced his own book club, and has already picked out its first reading assignment.

The famous rock bassist took to his Instagram on Friday to “informally” announce his new book club, which is apparently the kind of literary adventure on which Flea’s been wanting to embark for some time now. All are welcome to join “Flea’s Book Club,” which already has its first assigned read–Barracoon: The Story of the Last “Black Cargo” by Zora Neale Hurston.

Anyone participating in the first read can join Flea when he takes to his Instagram on July 25th at 11 a.m. PST to discuss the journey they’ve all been on over the last few weeks while exploring Hurston’s book.

Watch the two-part announcement below.

Flea has had plenty of time to dive into the quiet world of books since the Chili Peppers have been inactive since their March 15th performance at The Great Pyramids in Egypt.
