Funky jamband Formula 5 is recording their third full-length album, and they’ve launched a campaign on Kickstarter to help support the recording process. This will mark the upstate upstarts’ third studio effort, with the new album due to be released in Spring 2017. So far, the crowd-funding effort has pulled in more than 20% of their stated goal of $12,000, putting them ahead of schedule to reach their goal by their December 14th deadline.
Formula 5 keyboardist Matt Richards had this to say about the recording process, via a press release:
”I look forward to the process of arranging songs we have performed live many times, and how that will be different from the process of adapting our new songs from the album to their live arrangements. In a live setting, you have to perfect your arrangement of a song during the performance. You are limited by what arrangement you can perform in a singular moment. In the studio, your arrangements aren’t limited by what you can perform at one moment. That greatly increases the number of possible arrangements for a given song.”
This album will be the first for Formula 5 since locking in their new lineup, with bassist James Woods and keyboardist Matt Richards both entering the studio with Formula 5 for the first time.
“For me, going into the studio first time with a band brings on a feeling of accomplishment and becomes a landmark in our current musicianship. It showcases how much we’ve grown,” says Woods. “After playing in the live environment for so long it will be great to get every idea I have recorded clean and balanced. Recording in the past with previous bands has shown me it’s a learning experience every time. The options seem endless on what you can add or tweak and it’s great to be able to exchange ideas with a producer who has a fresh ear to the band’s sound”
Founding guitarist and vocalist Joe Davis is revved up to get into the studio with the new Formula 5 lineup, explaining “We’ve built a lot of chemistry over the last year and it’s been a fun journey that has inspired us to shoot for lofty goals and and do things that make all of us better. We believe that attitude will continue going forward into the recording process.”
