R&B soul-sensation Childish Gambino is making a quick rise in 2016. While more formally known as Donald Glover, the actor/writer/comedian/musician started as a writer for 30 Rock at the age of 23, rose to fame in Community and as the creator and star in FX’s Atlanta, and is currently cast as Lando Calrissian in Disney’s upcoming Han SoloStar Wars. But perhaps the most interesting part about this multi-talented artist is the musical masterpiece he released earlier this month, Awaken, My Love!, which explores the future dimensions of funk, rock, and soul.

The new album has received a great amount of attention with various degrees of opinion. While an excellent listen from beginning to end, the music has been compared to Funkadelic‘s Maggot Brain for its similarities in psychedelic rock and groove-oriented funk.

George Clinton had positive words to say about the new album in an interview with Hip Hop DX, explaining “I just heard it [Awaken, My Love] one time and I like the songs… I’m aware of his music and know he’s into P-Funk so I know it’s going to be some good music. I haven’t had a chance to get all the way into it. When I did hear it, it sounded like a cross between P-Funk and Prince influence. I’m proud that he’s into the funk and glad him and others are bringing some new funk back.” If you haven’t already, give the record a listen for yourself:

Clinton is currently collaborating with Flying Lotus for a new project and movie, and is also working on an upcoming Parliament album called Medicaid Fraud Dog. The new album features Bilal, Thundercat and frequent collaborator Junie Morrison, and is reportedly half way done.

In the same interview, Clinton explains of the new album, “It’s about all of the insurance get-over in the medicine field… The bullshit medicine, drugs and legal in some state drugs. The whole medical/pharmaceutical situation and the way people react to it.”

Clinton is hitting the road for his Mardi Gras Madness Tour starting in February.
