Goose transformed Providence’s Amica Mutual Pavilion into an 18th-century carnival Friday night, launching the band’s annual Goosemas celebration with theatrical grandeur. Host Barnaby Glimpse welcomed the crowd to his “Show Upon Time: A Phantom Menagerie”—”a carnival caught between tricks and delight”—setting the stage for an evening of conceptual ambition.

Dressed as period carnies, the band opened with Caravan Palace‘s “Dramaphone” as oversized puppet creatures roamed the elaborately decorated stage. Guest saxophonist/clarinetist Stuart Bogie remained onstage throughout, his woodwinds adding texture to a first set built entirely around animal-themed material: “Creatures”, “Atlas Dogs”, “Red Bird”, and the werewolf-themed “Silver Rising” flowed into The Shouting Matches‘ “Bear” and the instrumental “Moby”. The set culminated with the Goose debut of Pink Floyd‘s “Pigs (Three Different Ones)”, featuring drummer Cotter Ellis on lead vocals, and “Animal” drove the theme home.

Set two abandoned the menagerie theme for extended improvisation across just five songs. “So Ready” and an unfinished “Arrow” led into Radiohead‘s “Burn The Witch” (another Goose debut), before “Madhuvan” bled into “Dripfield”.

Closing out night one, the band returned to the stage for a three-song encore, starting with “Jed Stone”. Cotter sat out Gregory Alan Isakov‘s “Master & A Hound”, and Rick Mitarotonda and Peter Anspach finished the show with a duet on Neil Young‘s “Sugar Mountain”, the last debut of the night, which ended with Rick alone.
