Goose returned to Providence’s Amica Mutual Pavilion on Saturday to close out the band’s annual Goosemas celebration with night two of Barnaby Glimpse’s Show Upon Time: A Phantom Menagerie.

In contrast to Friday’s festive kickoff, the mood was heavy before showtime on Saturday after a shooting at nearby Brown University left two dead and nine others wounded. Parts of the city were still in lockdown when doors opened, and an increased police presence at the venue created an environment that felt secure, yet ominous. That ambivalent vibe subsided as fans filled the arena for a much needed night of togetherness.

Compared to night one’s carnival-esque “Dramophone” opener, night two got off to a gentler start. Before the lights came up, Rick Mitarotonda took the stage solo, again dressed like the ringleader of a Victorian-era circus. Illuminated by a single spotlight, he waded into the traditional “Wild Mountain Thyme” before being joined by Providence College Choir and then the rest of the band. The choir stayed on stage for “Give It Time”, singing and swaying behind Rick as the energy built up.

By the time the band reached “Flodown”, the air of apprehension had mostly lifted, allowing fans to rejoice to an uptempo “Echo of a Rose” and “Into the Myst”. As if to acknowledge the night’s unique combination of mourning and celebration, Goose debuted “Strange Overtones” by Brian Eno and David Byrne before finishing the set off with a pairing of “Wysteria Lane” and “(dawn)”.

Set two took on a more decidedly celebratory tone, starting with a cover of The Band‘s “Life Is A Carnival” featuring the return of saxophonist Stuart Bogie (who sat in throughout Friday’s show), plus Dave Nelson on trombone and Jordan McLean on trumpet. The horns stuck around for a trio of originals, “Thatch”, “Big Modern!”, and “Hot Tea”, each exceeding 15 minutes in length.

The set peaked with a house jam featuring DJ Marb Menthols (a.k.a. bassist Trevor Weekz) on turntables while costumed performers flooded the stage, dancing and painting the set props with UV paint. Goose then finished the frame with “Factory Fiction”.

Before the encore, the weekend’s enigmatic host Barnaby Glimpse took the stage and repeated the same welcome speech he delivered at the start of Friday’s show, creating a surreal deja vu effect befitting the “Show Upon Time” theme. Balloons rained on the crowd as Goose reprised Caravan Palace‘s “Dramophone” accompanied by the horn section, aerial dancers, and a full menagerie of characters and puppets. A joyous “The Empress Of Organos” featuring the horns and Providence College Choir capped the encore, before the intro music from Friday—Patience and Prudence‘s 1956 version of “Tonight You Belong To Me”—played in reverse over the P.A., completing the full-circle time warp.

Show Notes: The show began where the previous show left off – Rick walked up on stage and turned on the light as a choir began to sing a drone off stage. The choir then joined after the first chorus. During Marb House, a UV Dance Party commenced with characters dancing on stage and painting all the set props with UV paint. During the encore all of the characters and puppets appeared as well as two aerialists. There was also a balloon drop and confetti during Dramophone. The show ended with the veil opening back up, after the veil sequence, the characters, puppets, choir, and band had vanished. This show was part of Goosemas XII.
