Goose returned to the Palace Theatre on Wednesday for another night of explosive jams that culminated with a surprise sit-in from My Morning Jacket frontman and Louisville native Jim James.

A funky and soulful “Jive II” started the proceedings with an airy, atmospheric jam that gradually built to a soaring peak, setting the tone for a night of expansive and inspired improvisation. Even “Atlas Dogs”, one of the shortest songs of the night, included a compact excursion, clocking in at a potent seven and a half minutes.

The opening riff of “Earthling or Alien?” roused the crowd for what would be one of the longest jams of the night. Patiently wading into a chill funk groove, Goose was in no rush as the jam developed. The filter on Rick Mitarotonda‘s guitar steadily opened to a shimmery tone, supported by a lush bed of synths as the song swelled, crested, and crashed in a glorious wave.

The bluesy twang of “Turned Clouds” provided a nice contrast, with its laid-back New Orleans swagger, followed by “How It Ends”, which would have been a fitting finale, but Goose wasn’t done yet. A jamtronica-tinged “Slow Ready” jam drove it home, completing the unfinished version from the previous night and capping an outstanding first set.

Returning for set two, Goose cut right to the chase with an expansive 19-minute “Arrow”, leaving the song unfinished as “Rosewood Heart” emerged from the ether. The Beatles‘ psychedelic masterpiece “Tomorrow Never Knows” marked the first cover of the night, gradually unfolding into another dance-tronic exploration before giving way to “Dripfield”. The title track off Goose’s third studio LP turned out to be the longest jam of the night, but the biggest surprise was still yet to come.

Hometown hero Jim James helped finish the set on a memorable note, sitting in on his song “State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” and engaging in guitar pyrotechnics with Rick Mitarotonda. After leaving the audience stunned, James and the band returned for the encore with an invigorating, bluesy cover of The Band‘s “Don’t Do It” complete with more dual guitar fireworks.
