Goose closed out its winter tour with three nights at GLC Live at 20 Monroe in Grand Rapids, MI, finishing the band’s first outing as a quartet following percussionist Jeff Arevalo’s decision to step away from touring. The run also featured the band’s Canadian debut in Toronto and introduced significant upgrades to Andrew Goedde‘s light rig that enhanced the shows’ visuals.
The Grand Rapids run started on Thursday with an adventurous first set highlighted by a slow, melodic take on “All I Need”, which flowed seamlessly into “Lead Up”. Spoon‘s “Inside Out” marked another highlight of the first frame, which finished with a pairing of a short and sweet “Moby” and an extended “Flodown” jam. The band kept things fluid in set two, opening with a sprawling version of the title track from its upcoming album, Everything Must Go, and an ambitious “Arrow” jam before transitioning into “Interlude II” and an energetic “Jive I”. Then, after paying homage to the Grateful Dead with a cover of “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo”, the set wrapped with a tight take on “So Ready”. Goose sent fans home with an encore of “White Lights”.

Night two fell on Valentine’s Day and started with a playful take on “Drive” that featured teases of the Ghostbusters theme around the 12-minute mark. Set one also featured some of the weekend’s standout jams, including “A Western Sun” and “Animals”. Between the two, Goose embedded Pat Benatar‘s anthemic “Love is a Battlefield” amidst a series of original tunes. Set two began with a hypnotic, unfinished “Dripfield” that set the tone for a deep, exploratory sequence featuring jammed-out versions of “This Old Sea”, “Creatures”, and a cover of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes’ “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, played for the third time since its debut in December. A “Hot Tea” encore ended the night on a high note.

Saturday, the final night of the run, opened with “Give It Time”, the lead single from the band’s forthcoming album Everything Must Go, and continued with a memorable “(dawn)” and fast version of “Echo of a Rose”. The second set featured an electrifying “Pancakes” jam and concluded with Nina Simone‘s “Sinnerman” before the weekend came to a triumphant close with a two-song encore comprised of “726” and a soaring, cathartic “Madhuvan”.

Following Jeff Arevalo’s sudden departure, Goose’s winter run proved that the quartet lineup remains as dynamic and powerful as ever as the band embarks on this new chapter. With an upgraded light rig adding new visual depth, the foursome seamlessly blended deep improvisation with fresh material, showcasing Goose’s ability to adapt and evolve while staying true to its signature sound.
