Gorillaz have shared details of the band’s eighth studio album, Cracker Island. Out on February 24th, 2023 via Parlophone, the LP finds the animated foursome recruiting a host of guest contributors including Stevie Nicks, Tame Impala, Beck, Bad Bunny, Thundercat, Bootie Brown (The Pharcyde), and Adeleye Omotayo. Along with the announcement, the Devon Albarn-helmed project released “New Gold” featuring Tame Impala and Bootie Brown.
“New Gold” arrives with new age synths and Kevin Parker‘s filtered vocals, which combine to give the track an ultra-modern sound. The sleek instrumentation pairs with dance-forward beats as Bootie Brown lays down a couple of verses, only to later link up with 2D as Brown, Parker, and the animated singer create a structured three-part harmony to close the single.
The artists who signed on for Cracker Island may have bought more than they bargained for, as Gorillaz continue to recruit members for “The Last Cult”, which the group originally teased with the release of “Cracker Island” back in June. Bassist Murdoc has proclaimed himself the “self-appointed Great Leader” of the mysterious new movement.
“Murdoc, Noodle, Russel, and 2D have relocated to Silver Lake, California as they recruit new members to join ‘The Last Cult’, in search of the one truth to fix the world,” a press release reads. “Reports from the Golden State indicate that Murdoc is in love with the lady next door. Russel is glued to the TV. Noodle is compiling a handbook of wisdom and knowledge. And 2D is busy being 2D.”
