Governors Ball Music Festival returned to its recently adopted home of Flushing Meadow Corona Park in Queens, NY over the weekend for its 2024 installment. This year’s edition of the pop-friendly festival brought in chart-topping names and positioned them beside the rising stars of tomorrow for a stylistic summit on the future of pop music.
Beneath beautiful sunny skies, the lush Flushing Meadows Park was a bucolic backdrop for a weekend of music. Fans darted between three stages to catch non-stop music from noon to 10 p.m. daily. Post Malone stole the show on Friday from the moment he took the stage to a string symphony accompaniment. The rapper-singer ran through his bevy of radio hits like “Better Now”, “Rockstar”, “White Iverson”, and the closing “Congratulations” but also took time to connect with the packed audience personally. At one point, Postie brought two fans to the stage to sing and play guitar with him on “Stay”.
Postie’s fireworks-filled set highlighted the production value that puts Governors Ball at the top of the pop music festival food chain. Another performer who understood the assignment of pageantry was rising star Chappelle Roan. Emerging from a Big Apple in a full Lady Liberty outfit complete with green paint from head to toe, Roan commanded all eyes for the full 45 minutes she was onstage on Sunday. Other rising stars who broke through the densely packed roster of performers included Reneé Rapp, Sabrina Carpenter, and Sexyy Red who led an exceptionally female-forward festival lineup, all leading up to the climactic festival-closing Sunday set from SZA.
