Gov’t Mule closed out 2025 with a marathon New Year’s Eve performance celebrating the music of 1971 at New York’s Beacon Theatre, delivering a guest-packed show that featured 11 first-time-played covers and several rarities while Warren Haynes wielded Jerry Garcia‘s iconic Travis Bean TB500 #11 guitar.
The night opened strong with a seven-song first set highlighted by “Dreaming Out Loud” featuring the Chronic Horns (Pam Fleming, Jenny Hill, and Buford O’Sullivan), before the band unleashed an epic 22-song second set that showcased an impressive parade of guest performers and debut covers.
Jackie Greene anchored much of the second set, sitting in on guitar, keys, and vocals for 19 songs total. The collaboration produced a run of first-time-played material, including Grand Funk Railroad‘s “Footstompin’ Music”, James Gang‘s “Walk Away”, Dr. John‘s “Where Y’At Mule”, David Crosby‘s “Cowboy Movie” (with a “China Cat Sunflower” tease), George Harrison‘s “My Sweet Lord”, John Lennon‘s “Imagine”, Sly and the Family Stone‘s “Thank You For Talking To Me, Africa”, and Bob Dylan‘s “When I Paint My Masterpiece”, plus classic rock bust-outs—The Who‘s “We Don’t Get Fooled Again” (last played 897 shows ago on 6/4/11), The Doors‘ “Break On Through (to the Other Side)” (353 shows since 10/31/18), and the Rolling Stones‘ “Bitch” (518 shows since 1/18/17).
British vocalist Yola delivered powerful renditions Led Zeppelin‘s “Black Dog” and Janis Joplin‘s “Mercedes Benz” and “Me And Bobby McGee”. Louis Cato—bandleader for The Late Show With Stephen Colbert—then took the stage for a trilogy of soul classics, debuting “I Can’t Get Next To You” (Al Green), “Inner City Blues” (Marvin Gaye), and “What’s Going On?” (Marvin Gaye).
The show also featured the return of several rarities: Van Morrison‘s “Tupelo Honey” (last played 263 shows ago in 2019), Bill Withers‘ “Ain’t No Sunshine” (870 shows since 2013), the Grateful Dead‘s “Bertha” (404 shows since 2018), and Elton John‘s “Madman Across The Water” (900 shows since 2011). The evening closed with Greene joining for “Whipping Post”, complete with an “Auld Lang Syne” tease to usher in 2026.
