Gov’t Mule and Tedeschi Trucks Band brought their five-show co-headlining run to a close on Wednesday at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, MI, outside Detroit. To mark the occasion, Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks relived their days playing together in the Allman Brothers Band as Gov’t Mule debuted “Desdemona”—a song featured on the ABB’s final album, Hittin’ the Note—with Trucks sitting in.
The joint run pairing two of today’s biggest and most beloved blues-based bands has featured nightly collaborations, with the series of sit-ins culminating at Wednesday’s climactic finale. After opening Gov’t Mule’s set with a solo cover of Delta blues forerunner Son House‘s “Grinnin’ in Your Face” sang a cappella, Haynes later welcomed vocalists Alecia Chakour and Mike Mattison to sit in on “Dreaming Out Loud” along with the TTB horn section. Then, following a soulful cover of Al Green‘s “I’m a Ram”, Mule invited Trucks out for the band’s “Desdemona” debut.

Composed by Haynes and Gregg Allman for the ABB’s 2003 album, “Desdemona” originally featured both Haynes and Trucks, making the collaboration a fitting tribute to their history as longtime bandmates. The song has been a live staple for Warren Haynes Band, which includes three fourths of Gov’t Mule’s current touring lineup—Haynes, bassist Kevin Scott, and drummer Terence Higgins, who is currently filling in for Matt Abts while he recovers from drumming-related injuries—with the key differences between the bands being their respective keyboardists, repertoire, and Mule’s lack of saxophone. In any case, Wednesday marked the first time Gov’t Mule performed the song, and the first time Trucks and Haynes joined forces on the tune since The Brothers reunion at Madison Square Garden earlier this year. Mule then welcomed Susan Tedeschi to sit in on “Soulshine” to close the set.

Rounding out the night and finishing off the joint run, Tedeschi Trucks Band welcomed Haynes back to the stage at the end of its set to join in on another Allman Brothers Band song, “Whipping Post”, before closing the show with a little help from Gov’t Mule keyboardist Danny Louis, Haynes, and country artist Nolan Taylor (who opened the show) on what has become the theme song of the run, “With a Little Help From My Friends”.
