After launching their five-show co-headlining run in Toronto last week, Gov’t Mule and Tedeschi Trucks Band kept the momentum rolling with two more collaborative shows on Friday and Saturday, highlighted by a string of sit-ins. Then, with TTB taking a night off, Mule teamed up with moe. in Maine on Sunday for another round of guest-fueled fireworks.

On Friday night at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY, Gov’t Mule leader Warren Haynes and keyboardist Danny Louis emerged during Tedeschi Trucks Band’s set, helping close the night with a rousing cover of Little Feat’s “Spanish Moon” followed by Charles Segar’s blues standard “Key to the Highway”.

The cross-pollination deepened on Saturday at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, MA. Mule welcomed TTB vocalists Alecia Chakour and Mark Rivers for “Stoop So Low”, while saxophonist Kebbi Williams joined in on “Blind Man in the Dark”. Haynes later returned to the stage at the end of Tedeschi Trucks Band’s set, adding his guitar firepower to “Dreams” and “Stand Back”—songs he and Derek Trucks performed together many times as members of the Allman Brothers Band. The evening wrapped with a communal encore of “With a Little Help From My Friends”, with Haynes and Louis sitting in alongside the full TTB lineup.

While Tedeschi Trucks took a breather on Sunday, Gov’t Mule headed to Sidney, ME for a co-bill with moe. at Bowl in the Pines. During moe.’s set, Haynes came out to help close with the Allman Brothers classic “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed”, and later, moe. guitarist Chuck Garvey joined Mule for “Sco-Mule”, the band’s jazzy instrumental originally cut with John Scofield. moe.’s other guitarist, Al Schnier, appeared at the end of the night for a celebratory encore of the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree”.

With three nights of cross-band collaborations, the weekend underscored both the deep musical kinship between Mule, TTB, and moe., and the collaborative spirit at the heart of the jam scene.
