Gov’t Mule celebrated Record Store Day Black Friday with the release of a new five-song EP Time of the Signs. The collection was previously only available as a bonus CD included with the deluxe edition of Mule’s latest album Peace…Like A River, released back in June.

Available across streaming platforms and as an RSD exclusive vinyl, Time of the Sings contains five songs originally written during the same sessions that birthed Peace…Like A River. Singer/guitarist Warren Haynes explained in a press release that these holdovers contained their own collective musical identity and belonged together in the same way Peace…Like A River‘s songs belonged together. That identity leans on Mule’s classic rock foundations, from the opening “Stumblebum” bluesy electric shuffle soaking in Led Zeppelin influence to the Summer of Love-tinged breezy psychedelia of “Under the Tent”. Time of the Signs also includes an alternate version of “The River Only Flows One Way” with Haynes on lead vocals, following the original version with Billy Bob Thornton singing on Like A River.

The timing of Mule’s nod to Zeppelin is fortuitous as the 32nd edition of Haynes’ annual Christmas Jam in his hometown of Asheville, NC approaches. On December 9th, Haynes will present a lineup featuring Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening along with other classic rock heroes Billy F. Gibbons (ZZ Top), Slash with Myles Kennedy, and more in an all-night-long musical marathon benefitting the Asheville Area Habitat For Humanity and local food bank BeLoved. Tickets are on sale here. Following Christmas Jam, Gov’t  Mule will make up its long-awaited three-night New Year’s Eve run in Philadelphia and New York City that was postponed in 2022 before jetting off to Island Exodus 14 in Jamaica.
