The beloved Gov’t Mule settled into NYC’s historic Beacon Theatre for the first of two shows along a highly anticipated New Year’s run. With very little clue as to what they’re planning for New Year’s Eve, Mule got to work on a rocking show that featured a number of great covers, special guests, and of course some of the band’s classic tunes.

The show opened with a pair of covers in ZZ Top’s “Just Got Paid” and The Beatles’ “And Your Bird Can Sing”, and the band kept up the energy with jams on “Temporary Saint” and “When The World Gets Small.” Warren Haynes and co paid tribute to Prince with a “When Doves Cry” that also flipped back and forth between “Beautifully Broken.”

Set two brought more of the guests for the run, as Marcus King, Steve Holley & Paul Ill joined in for a take on the Marshall Tucker Band classic, “Can’t You See.” King stayed on for another great selection, trading licks with Haynes on “Freeway Jam.” The magic wasn’t over, as Jimmy Vivino later emerged for a jam on “The Other One”, and stayed for a cover of Deep Purple’s “Hush” with another very special guest, Carmine Appice. Vivino would return with Mule for the encore of Robert Johnson’s “32/20 Blues”.
