Grateful Dead shared a rendition of “Good Lovin'” on Wednesday set to appear in the upcoming 50th-anniversary expanded edition of Grateful Dead (aka Skull & Roses). The track was recorded live on July 2nd, 1971 at San Francisco’s Fillmore West.
Coming in as the set two closer, the Dead are primed and ready by this point as evidenced by Ron “PigPen” McKernan coming in hot at the start of the live cut. Though Pig steps back from the mic early on, letting the rest of the band do their thing, it’s still his show. Soon enough, the blues frontman returns to his post to deliver a soulful rap while Jerry Garcia climbs up and down the neck of his guitar.

Out on June 25th, the expanded version of the Dead’s 1971 self-titled live album will feature 10 tracks from the July 2nd, 1971 show, including “Good Lovin'”. Just like Skull & Roses itself, the 7/2/71 show stands as a testament to a transitional period for the Grateful Dead. With the heydey of the 1960s behind them, the band had become seasoned professionals at the dawn of the 1970s. In tandem with Skull & Roses, the 7/2/71 show is a historical document to a time in Dead history defined by endless possibilities.
