On Sunday, July 29th, Greensky Bluegrass took the stage at Naeba Ski Resort in Yuzawa, Niigata Prefecture, Japan at the foot of Mount Fuji for their highly awaited performance at the world-famous Fuji Rock Festival. The set saw the band lean heavily on material from their 2014 release, If Sorrows Swim, with 9 of the album’s 12 tracks making it onto the show’s setlist.
Greensky Bluegrass opened their Japanese festival performance with a trio of tunes from If Sorrows Swim (“Demons”, “Wings For Wheels”, and “Kerosene”). “Just To Lie”, off the band’s 2008 album Five Interstates was up next, followed by another selection from If Sorrows Swim, “Windshield”. “Living Over” (from 2016’s Shouted, Written Down, & Quoted) came next, followed by another trio of If Sorrows Swim songs, “In Control”, “A Letter To Seymour”, “The Four”, the latter of which was dedicated to Jack Johnson, who had welcomed members of Greensky to sit in on his own Fuji Rock set earlier in the day. The set kept moving from there as the band moved seamlessly into an extended take on “Run or Die”. Finally, the set finished strong with a quick “Past My Prime”, an exploratory 17-minute “Leap Year”, and a set-closing rendition of Phish‘s “Chalkdust Torture”, before the band returned to the stage for one last If Sorrows Swim tune in the encore slot.
