Greensky Bluegrass spread the love on New Year’s Eve by ringing in 2025 with a string of sweet covers alongside openers Fruition at Denver’s Mission Ballroom.
After a full set and a half of GSBG classics including “Leap Year”, “Past My Prime”, “Living Over”, “All Four”, and “A Letter to Seymour”, Paul Hoffman, Anders Beck, Dave Bruzza, Mike Devol, and Michael Bont—all dressed in their New Year’s best—celebrated the ball drop with Robert Burns‘ traditional “Auld Lang Syne” (featuring guest appearances by Father Time and Baby New Year). From there on out, it was a group effort as Fruition’s Jay Cobb Anderson, Kellen Asebrock, Mimi Naja, and Tyler Thompson joined the fray.
The series of “lovely” covers kicked off with Bobby “Blue” Bland‘s Grateful Dead favorite “Turn on Your Lovelight”, not seen at a Greensky show since September 20th, 2017, per Phantasy Tour. As Beck enticed the crowd, suggesting “Let’s have a big ole f–ing love-fest,” and the band dug up Led Zeppelin‘s “Whole Lotta Love” for the first time since 9/16/17, the theme began to emerge before GSBG’s first cover of Huey Lewis and The News‘ “Power of Love” since Halloween 2012 cemented the songs’ common thread. There was still plenty more love to give, with the Greensky Bluegrass debut of Bill Withers‘ “Kissing My Love” before longtime band favorite “Could You Be Loved” by Bob Marley—with the added bonus of Mimi Naja on melodica—finished the second set. Returning to the core five for the encore, Greensky Bluegrass closed the show with “Run or Die” and sent fans out into 2025.
