Beloved Michigan-based road warriors, Greensky Bluegrass, has announced today that they have a new album Shouted, Written Down & Quoted due out September 23 on the band’s own Big Blue Zoo Records label. The new record comes two years after their 2014 If Sorrows Swim, and is their 7th studio release since 2004.

In congruence with this exciting news, they’ve also released a new track from the record, “Past My Prime”, which singer/mandolin player Paul Hoffman wrote some long time ago, but felt moved to resurrect in the studio. “The enthusiasm for the whole project began spilling into the unknown musical creature we were making,” he tells Billboard. “Frankly, I think we’re all pretty stoked with the little rock and roll monster that was born from a song out of the shadows.”

A natural progression in the state of modern bluegrass, Hoffman describes the lyrics as “not serious” and “not that personal,” and that he wrote it “in jest” and as more of a “stream of conscious.”

“Sometimes I can evoke more emotion with the lyrics when it’s more of an exercise than personal catharsis,” he concludes. What started as one thought years ago has since evolved to Greensky Bluegrass’s newest song — the respect for time in this setting is with life-defining reasoning.
