Yesterday, Detroit-native rocker Jack White received the key to the city of Cincinnati, OH from Mayor John Cranley while he was in town to headline the third day of Bunbury Music Festival. The key presentation took place at the former facility of King Records, the landmark Cincinnati record label that operated from 1943 through 1974 and helped launch the careers of numerous artists including, under their Federal Records imprint, James Brown.

King Records legends like Otis Williams, Philip Paul, and Bootsy Collins [pictured above] were on hand to help recognize White for performing at the festival as well as for his efforts to honor the King Records legacy. In his presentation, Mayor Cranley [pictured above] highlighted White’s advocacy for music preservation (through his own Third Man Records and beyond) and showed appreciation for his specific support of the Cincinnati record institution.

“Jack White has been an unfailing supporter of King Records,” said Mayor John Cranley. “Jack has actually covered Little Willie John‘s song, “I’m Shakin'”, which on the original recording our own Philip Paul played the drums, and he recently wore a King Records shirt in a cover story for Q Magazine.”

According to a press release,

The City of Cincinnati recently acquired the former King Records studio building, saving it from demolition, and is working with Evanston neighborhood president Ms. Anzora Adkins [pictured above] and the King Records Nonprofit Steering Committee to stabilize and revitalize the building. The group is made up of leaders of the Cincinnati USA Music Heritage Foundation, King Studios and the Bootsy Collins Foundation. Given the tremendous and truly unique music, business and civil rights history which took place at the building, leaders have declared the location sacred.
