On April 27th, alternative-R&B starlet Janelle Monáe will release her long-awaited third studio album, Dirty Computer. Today, Monáe has released a brand-new single titled “PYNK”, which also features Monáe’s past collaborator, Canadian indie songstress Grimes. Marking the third single off the upcoming Diry Computer following previous singles “Make Me Feel” and “Django Jane”, the release of “PYNK” was paired with a triumphant music video directed by Emma Westenberg and starring actress Tessa Thompson.
A description of the new song reads, “PYNK is a brash celebration of creation. self love. sexuality. and pussy power! PYNK is the color that unites us all, for pink is the color found in the deepest and darkest nooks and crannies of humans everywhere… PYNK is where the future is born….” Unsurprisingly, the video, which is described as an “EMOTION PICTURE (definition): a narrative film and accompanying musical album,” focuses on celebrating the power of the pussy. Set in the desert, the poppy, anthemic tune is accompanied by a celebratory and whimsical music video, which you can watch below.
Janelle Monáe & Grimes – “PYNK”
Janelle Monáe’s Dirty Computer is due out later this month on April 27th, marking her first album in five years. In addition to Grimes (who does not appear in the official music video for “PYNK”), the album also features contributions from the Purple One himself, the late and great Prince. Like the other two singles off the album and this newest release, Dirty Computer sees Janelle Monáe solidifying herself as a feminist icon and outspoken civil rights activist. Last month, Monáe made waves with her impassioned speech at the Grammys, which rallied to fight against sexual harassment and abuse in the industry.
