On Sunday evening, after rounding out a three-night run with Phish at Boulder, CO’s Folsom Field, bassist Mike Gordon dropped by Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre for a surprise sit-in during Sunday’s Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration.

Following two sets backed by the Colorado Symphony, the all-star house band for the night—comprised of Oteil Burbridge (bass, vocals), Tom Hamilton (guitar, vocals), Melvin Seals (keys, vocals), Jacklyn LaBranch (vocals, percussion), Lady Chi (vocals, percussion), and Duane Trucks (drums)—stuck around to deliver a third set featuring more conventional JGB-style instrumentation and a number of beloved covers from the live Garcia songbook.

Midway through the third set, Mike Gordon joined the band onstage to add a second low end line to a rendition of Eric Clapton’s “Lay Down Sally”. The double-bass take of the blues-rock classic soon barreled into a bass/drums jam during which Burbridge—wielding his new “Dire Wolf” bass inspired by Garcia’s “Wolf” guitar—squared off with Gordon for several entrancing minutes of improvisation before returning to “Lay Down Sally”. Gordon also stuck around for the take on Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up In Blue” that followed.
