Jimi Hendrix was a musician whose impact permeated its way into the core of many popular styles of Western music today. One of Jimi’s most familiar original songs, which still evokes the same levels of raw energy today, is the psychedelic ’60s anthem, “Foxy Lady”, recorded 59 years ago today on December 13th, 1966.

“Foxy Lady” was released in the United States on Reprise Records a year later, in December 1967. The song also went on to appear on the North American release of 1967’s Are You Experienced. To celebrate the song’s studio recording anniversary, revisit some sublime versions of the ageless rock tune as played throughout the years by Jimi and some of our other favorite artists.

To start off, watch the man himself shred the guitar with the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s classic rendition of the song from the 1968 Miami Pop Festival.

The Grateful Dead caught wind of Hendrix early on, sharing the bill with the JHE at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. The Dead, unfortunately, were sandwiched between The Who—who ended their performance by smashing their instruments to pieces—and Jimi Hendrix—who lit his guitar on fire, creating one of the most iconic images in all of rock n’ roll. Listen to the Dead weave “Foxy Lady” into their jam a year later at the Ark in Boston.

Roosevelt Collier, steel guitar extraordinaire, also covered the song during Brooklyn Comes Alive 2016. Bringing together guitarist Rob Compa and keyboardist Eli Winderman of Dopapod, bassist Michael League of Snarky Puppy, and drummer Adrian Tramontano of Kung Fu, Roosevelt Collier’s New York Get Down brought the house down with their rendition of “Foxy Lady” (which starts at 1:13:04) to close out their set.

Fittingly, for the 25th anniversary of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame concert, the Jeff Beck Band and Billy F. Gibbons of ZZ Top joined forces to pay tribute to the song. Check out the powerhouse performance below.

Next up, check out the boys from Greensky Bluegrass squeeze the track in between “Doing My Time” and “Worried About the Weather” from their October performance last year at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, OR. The song starts right around the 11-minute mark.

Grace Potter crushes a dual cover of “Nothing But The Water” and “Foxy Lady” on her Flying V guitar during one of her COVID-era Twilight Hour webcasts.

Close this run out by revisiting JHE’s rendition of “Foxy Lady” during the band’s storied visit to Maui in July 1970, which was the subject of a recent documentary and live album.
