A recent John Mayer solo acoustic tour took a detour through the Grateful Dead catalog by way of Terrapin Station. The guitarist used his show at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, FL to debut a solo take on “Lady With A Fan” from the Dead’s orchestral suite.

The show marked marked the second of two performances this week as a part of Mayer’s ongoing solo acoustic tour. The guitarist, who recently wrapped up The Final Tour with Dead & Company, has previously worked Grateful Dead songs into his solo setlists. Previous covers have included “Ripple” and “Friend of the Devil“, which fall more in line with the intimate, singalong nature of Mayer’s solo gigs.

The Grammy-winning pop star switched things up this time, however, picking the opening segment of the Dead’s ambitious arrangement. “Lady With A Fan” begins the seven-song Terrapin Station movement (dubbed “Terrapin 1”) off the Dead’s 1977 album of the same name. While Dead & Company played the complete suite throughout its eight-year tenure, Mayer hopped off the train following “Lady With A Fan”—just prior to the cathartic “Terrapin” segment—and instead switched tracks to his original “The Age of Worry”.
