John Mayer is just a few shows deep in his The Search For Everything Tour, stopping at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts on Sunday night. From top to bottom, these shows have delivered outstanding versions of Mayer’s career-spanning catalogue. The show begins with Mayer and a full live band, before the instrumentalists leave the stage to Mayer and an acoustic guitar. Bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan then return for the John Mayer Trio portion of the evening, and are eventually joined by the rest of the full band for another set and encore, before leaving JM to a second encore, with the epilogue “You’re Gonna Live In Me Forever.”

Last night featured the debut of Mayer’s new guitar, a Paul Reed Smith-made Strat look-alike. You can hear the tone in the video below, courtesy of Matt Frazier:

While touring in support of his upcoming The Search For Everything album, Mayer has used the stage to perfect the new songs released earlier this year. “Moving On and Getting Over” and “Love on the Weekend” were both featured in the full-band portions of the evening, while “Emoji of a Wave” received acoustic treatment. Songs from his past records, like “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room” and “Gravity” still make their soul-stirring appearances on a regular basis, to the delight of his devoted fanbase.

During the John Mayer Trio section, a version of Chuck Berry‘s “Johnny B. Goode” made its tour debut. Mayer has experience in performing this song alongside his bandmates in Dead & Company, so it’s fun and interesting to hear the big rock song played out by the trio.
