Joe Russo’s Almost Dead completed their second night at the Wiltern Theatre on Friday night in Los Angeles, California. After the set break, guitarist and vocalist John Mayer joined the stage for the entirety of the second set and encore. After the band introduced the Dead & Company guitarist as “Instagram’s John Mayer”, a nod to his new Sunday series on Instagram TV, Mayer jumped right in.
Joe Russo’s Almost Dead – Set One Opener
Having performed with Mayer a number of times by now, drummer Joe Russo, keyboardist Marco Benevento, bassist Dave Dreiwitz, and guitarists Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger had a true synergy with the third guitarist at Friday night’s show. Allowing him to take lead, jam, and soar along with the band’s already-harmonious relationship added a whole new level to the show that will make any fan (or hater) jealous.
Joe Russo’s Almost Dead – Set Two Opener
Providing John Mayer-esque solos throughout the night, Mayer showed off his licks, while respectfully jamming with the bandmates on stage, during their Grateful Dead-inspired setlist, “The Wheel”, “Playin’ In The Band”, “Here Comes Sunshine”, “They Love Each Other”, China Cat Sunflower”, and “I Know You Rider”. The sextet once again returned to the stage for the double encore, Three Dog Night‘s “Never Been To Spain” and The Dead’s “Uncle John’s Band”.
