On Saturday night, The Nth Power guitarist Nick Cassarino and guitarist/vocalist Noam Dworman offered up an intimate performance at New York City’s Olive Tree above the Comedy Cellar. During the set, Cassarino welcomed guitarist John Mayer for a trio of collaborative tunes. Cassarino and Mayer were joined by comedian Sherrod Small, as well as a horn section of Coleman Hughes and Max Boiko for parts of Mayer’s sit-in.
The surprise of the night began as Cassarino was offering up a cover of Michael Jackson‘s “Man In The Mirror”. During the song, Mayer suddenly appeared, sitting down with his guitar beside Nick and Sherrod Small. The guitarists continued forward with a take on the traditional blues number “How Blue Can You Get (Downhearted)”, as Cassarino and Mayer traded off impassioned guitar solos in the intimate club. To round out Mayer’s surprise appearance, the guitarists worked through a soul-lathered rendition of Bill Withers‘ “Ain’t No Sunshine”, accompanied by Hughes and Boiko on their horns.
Luckily, there’s fan-shot video for those who were unable to attend, which you can watch below:
