During Sunday’s 68th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, Grateful Dead co-founder Bob Weir was one of the recently departed music legends honored with thoughtful tributes by the artists they influenced. John Mayer, Weir’s bandmate in arena-filling spinoff act Dead & Company, spoke about Bobby in a pre-recorded segment soundtracked by “Playing in the Band”.
“To play music with Bob Weir was to learn from a master,” Mayer said in the Grammy tribute to Bob Weir, which included clips of the guitarist from throughout his 60-year career. “He understood songwriting to its core, having written and performed some of the most enduring music in American history. Bob was a messenger, not only for the music he made with the Grateful Dead, but for the tapestry of influences that birthed it—rock, folk, blues, R&B, and country. He followed his muse wherever it led him, and that devotion was shared by all who followed him.”
“Bob has left us, but the songs he sang will remain a roadmap for a better, more meaningful life,” Mayer’s tribute concluded. “See you down the road, Ace.” Watch the full tribute to Bob Weir at the 2026 Grammy Awards delivered by John Mayer below.
Mayer had previously paid tribute to his friend, mentor, and Dead & Company bandmate in the weeks since Weir’s January 2026 passing. He channeled Bobby’s no-B.S. approach with his brief, stoic homage online, then gave a tearful eulogy and led a crowd sing-along of “Ripple” at the official “Homecoming” public memorial event in San Francisco on January 17th.
