After a two year layoff since his last single, “XO”, was released, John Mayer revealed last week that he would release a new single called “Love on the Weekend” today. The Dead & Company guitarist has spent the last few months working on his own music, and surprised fans with the announcement through his personal Instagram account. The details were scarce until yesterday, when Mayer posted that the new song will be premiered today at 4PM ET through Facebook Live, and that he would be answering some questions too.
So, here we are. It’s an hour before 4PM, and the song is already available for listen on Spotify. A tweet from Mayer on October 19th revealed that he would be “comin’ back” to Pop Music. This new track is a testament to that sentiment. The 3:32 song stays within the confines of a pop tune and features no drifting solos, something that his most recent fans might crave.

In one of his most recent Instagram posts, he explained that he “took a pass of a solo just for you…now onto the one for the record.” Perhaps this is the guitar solo pass of which he was referencing. Fingers crossed that this means the solo record is coming soon along with more of the blues hand we all know and love.
