John Scofield has assembled an all-star band featuring Lettuce drummer Adam Deitch, renowned keyboardist Larry Goldings, and Dead & Company and Allman Brothers Band bassist Oteil Burbridge to explore the funkier side of his catalog during a run dubbed John Scofield: Electrospective.
The shows will draw from the eras of Scofield’s Blue Matter, Überjam, and A Go Go projects, alongside fresh material cut from the same groove-oriented cloth. The first confirmed date is October 15th at Ludlow Garage in Cincinnati, with a full slate of shows expected to be announced soon.
Deitch broke the news on social media, barely containing his excitement: “Well I guess nows the time to announce i will be doing a few weeks of shows with my favorite mentor and guitar genius John Scofield in the fall,” Deitch wrote. “We will be exploring his electric funky tunes as an ‘Electrospective’ with organist Larry Goldings (listen to Life on Planet groove by Maceo parker, thats him on keys AND left hand bass!) On bass guitar we have another mentor, friend and limitless bassist Oteil Burbridge who i am very excited to play with. Full list of dates to be announced soon. This will an EPIC run!! Stoked!!”
All three collaborators have history with Scofield. Deitch was a member of his Überjam band, an experimental groove-forward outfit that toured widely and recorded three albums together, one of which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album in 2002. Scofield later joined the drummer as a special guest on several Adam Deitch Quartet albums. Goldings, a versatile keyboardist equally at home in jazz and funk—much like Scofield himself—played in Scofield’s quartet in the mid-’90s and has reconnected with him several times since, most recently with Scary Goldings, his collaborative project with Scary Pockets. Burbridge shared the stage with Scofield when he sat in with the Allman Brothers Band during their annual Beacon Theatre residency in 2011.
A complete tour schedule has yet to be announced, but with Deitch, Burbridge, and Goldings locked in, anticipation is already building. Fans can expect more details from Scofield’s camp in the coming weeks.
