Nearly seven months after being fired by the Red Hot Chili Peppers to make room for guitarist John Frusciante, Josh Klinghoffer has released a new single featuring RHCP bassist Flea and the band’s original drummer, Jack Irons. Titled “Nowhere I Am”, the son arrives via Klinghoffer’s solo project, Pluralone. While some had speculated that tensions remained high between Klinghoffer and his former bandmates, this move certainly reaffirms his positive statements about the band following his departure.

“Nowhere I Am” begins with washed-out vocals and increases in energy consistently throughout the song. Irons’ drums enter softly, along with a piano, before becoming more pronounced and working well in conjunction with Flea’s bass. After the second chorus where Klinghoffer reiterates the song’s eponymous refrain, he takes a guitar solo before moving into the bridge section and finally scaling back the energy towards the end.
“‘Nowhere I Am’ is one of those songs I feel has a universal message that everyone can understand,” Klinghoffer said in a statement to SPIN. “Then I remember how abstruse I can write sometimes. I swear at some point, it was about something we all feel.”
He continued, “Maybe the last verse is a little pompous, writing about walking around Paris in May. As usual, I rely on the chords and melody to carry songs sometimes when the lyrics don’t offer an easy in.”
Originally recorded with the rest of the songs from his debut album, To Be One With You, “Nowhere I Am” arrived with a B-Side, “Directrix”. The B-Side, unlike “Nowhere I Am”, did not include contributions from Flea or Irons.
“These songs were 15 and 16 (out of 17) on the list of importance (I guess) from the To Be One With You sessions, but I’m very glad they’re coming out. Flea plays a great bass on ‘Nowhere I Am,'” said Klinghoffer to SPIN. Since the release of To Be One With You last year, Klinghoffer has released six additional singles. Based on his statement to SPIN, there may be a final single dropped from the To Be One With You sessions.
