This past Sunday night, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead made a weekend-closing appearance at Green River Festival in Greenfield, MA, the outfit’s first show since their set at Candler Park Festival on June 3rd (and their 113th show overall). The set featured a pair of top-notch substitutes, with bassist Jon Shaw filling in for Dave Dreiwitz, who is on tour with Ween, and Dead & Company keyboardist Jeff Chimenti handling keyboard duties while Marco Benevento is occupied with his solo band.

The single-set show saw the band in fine form as always, despite the time off and roster shakeup, as the band flowed through their set with barely any breaks in the music. After a brief tuning/soundcheck “jam,” the band kicked into “Loser,” followed by “Feel Like A Stranger,” both benefiting from some fun and focused improvisation. As “Stranger” petered out, a pretty surf-rock jam emerged that hinted at “They Love Each Other” before moving into a beautiful “Row Jimmy.”

“Alligator” came next, and made its way into a “Slipknot!” jam for a moment before the band steered into “Franklin’s Tower.” “Mr. Charlie” came next, followed by a grooving “Mississippi Half Step” and a shape-shifting run through the first verse of “The Other One.” Instead of finishing the classic Bob Weir tune, the band launched off into the cosmos, touching subtly on “Dark Star” and featuring a slew of robotic tones from Chimenti before moving into a brief taste of “He’s Gone” and , eventually, landing in “Ramble On Rose”

The sing-alongs continued with “Good Lovin,'” featuring a full-band “Feel Like A Stranger” tease and a “Ruben & Cherise” tease from Tom Hamilton. A “Let It Grow” jam grew out of “Good Lovin’, before laying down roots in a celebratory “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad.” An instrumental-only take on “We Bid You Goodnight” closed out the set proper, before a bouncing “Not Fade Away” encore capped the performance.
