It was a historic week for Khruangbin as the trio delivered two sold-out shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Sunday and Monday. The shows also marked the first headlining appearances by the Thai-funk outfit at the famed Morrison, CO venue.
Both shows were filled with fan-favorites from the group’s trio of LPs; The Universe Smiles Upon You (2015), Con Todo El Mundo (2018), and Mordechai (2020). In addition to the music, K-bin brought some new tricks to Red Rocks with an updated stage design. Guitarist Mark Speer, bassist Laura Lee, and drummer Donald “DJ” Johnson all played atop UFO-shaped platforms outfitted with LED lights that coordinated colors with the music.
Additionally, many attendees toward the front of the stage were given inflatable alien balloons adorned with the band’s name and “Close Encounters Of The Third Room”—a subtle play on “Evan Finds The Third Room” as much as it was an homage to the 1977 sci-fi film that inspired the phrase—just prior to the encore to drive home the intergalactic theme.
